ADB-Japan Scholarship Program For Asia-Pacific Students

The ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) offers approximately 135 graduate scholarships annually to students from Asia-Pacific countries for studies in fields such as economics, business and management, science and technology, and other development-related areas.

What is Offered:

• ​Full tuition fees
• Monthly subsistence allowance (including housing)
• Books and instructional materials
• Medical insurance
• Travel expenses

For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be available for thesis preparation. Under certain conditions, additional support for computer literacy, preparatory language courses, and similar needs may also be covered.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be a national of an ADB borrowing member country or a Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
• Must not hold dual citizenship with any developed country.
• Must have gained admission to an approved master’s course at a Designated Institution.
• Must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record.
• Must have at least two years of full-time professional experience acquired after obtaining a university degree.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English.
• Must be no more than 35 years old at the time of application (age limit may be waived in exceptional cases with the endorsement of the Government of Japan).
• Must be in good health.
• Must agree to return to and work in their home country for at least two years after completing the program.
• Must not be an Executive Director, Alternate Director, management, staff, or consultant of ADB, or their close relatives.
• Must not be staff of ADB-JSP Designated Institutions.
• Must not be living or working in a country other than their home country.
• Must not already be enrolled in graduate degree programs.

Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Viet Nam.

Application Procedure:

1. Request information and application forms from the chosen partner institution.
2. Complete the required documents, including the ADB-JSP information sheet.
3. Send the completed documents to the institution.
4. The institution evaluates applications and makes admission decisions.
5. The institution sends a shortlist of candidates to ADB.
6. ADB reviews submissions from institutions.
7. ADB recommends awardees based on selection criteria to the Japanese executive director for approval.
8. ADB selects scholars and informs the institution.
9. The institution informs all selected scholars.
