Knight-Hennessy Scholars — Stanford University, USA

8/30/2026

PictureKnight-Hennessy Scholars — Stanford University, USA
Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) is Stanford University's flagship, university-wide graduate fellowship and leadership development program. It was established through a founding gift from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and former Stanford president John Hennessy, and is widely described as one of the largest fully endowed graduate fellowship programs in the world. Each year it admits a diverse, multidisciplinary global cohort of graduate students who show strong leadership potential, independence of thought, purposeful pursuit of their goals, and a commitment to serving others (civic mindset).

Scholarship Program Overview
KHS is not a standalone degree program — it funds and supports scholars who are separately admitted to a full-time graduate degree program at Stanford. Selected scholars:
  • Receive funding for up to three years while completing their Stanford graduate degree.
  • Join a structured, cohort-based leadership development experience alongside their academic studies.
  • Become part of a lifelong global community of Knight-Hennessy Scholars and alumni.
Because it spans the entire university, KHS scholars come from a wide range of disciplines and pursue very different graduate programs, unified by the shared leadership curriculum.

Eligible Courses / Degree ProgramsKHS funds full-time graduate degree programs across Stanford's schools, including (but not limited to):
  • PhD programs (across all schools)
  • JD (Law)
  • MD (Medicine)
  • MBA (Business)
  • MS and MA programs
  • MFA and other professional/terminal graduate degrees
Generally not eligible: certain part-time, executive, or non-standard programs (e.g., the Honors Cooperative Program, Master of Liberal Arts, JSD, MLS), current Stanford PhD students adding a master's in the same discipline, and some co-terminal degree arrangements. Applicants should always verify current program eligibility on the official site, as the list can be updated.
Scholarship Benefits
  • Full tuition funding for the graduate degree program (up to three years)
  • A living stipend to cover reasonable living expenses
  • An annual travel stipend
  • A one-time relocation allowance for incoming scholars
  • Supplemental funding for academic and leadership enrichment activities
  • Access to a structured, multi-year leadership development curriculum
  • Mentorship and a global peer/alumni network
Eligibility
  • Open to applicants of any nationality — there is no citizenship restriction.
  • No upper age limit.
  • Applicants must have earned (or be on track to earn) their first bachelor's degree within a recent, defined window before their intended Stanford enrollment date; this window is typically extended for applicants with qualifying military service. (Exact cutoff years shift annually — check the current cycle's eligibility page.)
  • Applicants must independently qualify for admission to an eligible full-time Stanford graduate degree program — KHS admission cannot substitute for or guarantee graduate program admission, and vice versa.
  • Selection is based on demonstrated leadership potential, independent and purposeful thinking, and a record of civic engagement/service — not solely on academic metrics.
Requirements
Applicants generally need to prepare:
  • A completed online KHS application (separate from the Stanford graduate program application)
  • Personal essays / short-answer responses addressing the KHS selection criteria
  • A current resume or CV
  • Academic transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • A short video statement (requested from shortlisted candidates only, not required at initial submission)
  • A separate, concurrent application to an eligible Stanford graduate degree program, meeting that program's own admissions requirements (transcripts, test scores if required, recommendation letters, application fee, etc.)
Application Process
  1. Submit the KHS application through the official online portal by the KHS deadline.
  2. Apply separately to your chosen Stanford graduate program(s) — this must be done by the program's own deadline or a general cut-off date set by KHS, whichever is earlier. Both applications run concurrently and independently.
  3. Shortlisting: A subset of applicants is invited to submit a video statement.
  4. Finalist interviews: Finalists are notified and invited to individual interviews, typically conducted online.
  5. Immersion weekend: Finalists may be invited to an in-person "Immersion Weekend" on the Stanford campus.
  6. Final selection: Scholars are notified of the outcome; KHS admission is contingent on also being admitted to the affiliated Stanford graduate program.
  7. Enrollment: Scholars begin their graduate program and the KHS leadership curriculum together in the fall.

Deadlines (General Pattern — confirm exact dates each cycle)
  • The KHS application typically opens in the spring/summer and closes in early October for the following academic year's cohort.
  • The associated Stanford graduate program application is generally due by December 1 of the same year (or the specific program's own earlier deadline — whichever comes first) if not already submitted.
  • Interview invitations, finalist notifications, and final decisions typically follow between January and March, with scholars starting their programs the following September.
Note: KHS updates its exact deadlines annually. Always confirm current dates on the official admissions page before applying.
