The Schwarzman Scholars program is an elite, fully-funded fellowship designed to build a bridge between the world’s future leaders and China. Organized by the Schwarzman Scholars foundation in partnership with Tsinghua University, this initiative selects a diverse cohort of up to 200 scholars annually to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in Beijing.

The program is inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship and aims to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. Scholars live and study at Schwarzman College, a purpose-built facility on the Tsinghua University campus. The experience combines academic rigor with unparalleled access to international mentors, internships, and deep-dive travel seminars across China.

2. Academic Programs & Fields of Study

All scholars earn a Master of Global Affairs. While following a core curriculum focused on leadership and China's development, students choose a concentration in one of three areas:

3. Scholarship Benefits

The fellowship is one of the most comprehensive in the world, covering:

• Full Tuition & Fees: Complete coverage of all academic costs.
• Room & Board: High-end on-campus housing and all meals.
• Travel: Round-trip airfare to and from Beijing.
• Personal Stipend: A fixed allowance for personal expenses.
• Inclusions: Health insurance, required course books, a Lenovo laptop, and an in-country study tour.

4. Eligibility & Core Requirements

To maintain a high standard of leadership and academic potential, candidates must meet the following:

• Undergraduate Degree: Completed degree in any field before the program start date.
• Age Range: Candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years old as of August 1st of their enrollment year.
• English Proficiency: High-level mastery is required (TOEFL iBT 100+, IELTS 7.0+, or equivalent). Note: Waived if you graduated from an institution where English was the primary language of instruction for at least two years.
• Leadership Track Record: Selection is based on "intellectual ability, exemplary character, and leadership potential."

5. Annual Application Process

The application is entirely digital and typically follows this sequence every year:

1. Online Portal: Applicants register and complete sections on personal history, professional experience, and academic records.
2. Essays: Two mandatory pieces—a Leadership Essay (750 words) and a Statement of Purpose (500 words).
3. Recommendations: Three letters that specifically address leadership and academic prowess.
4. Video Intro: A 60-second video introduction (highly recommended).
5. Interviews: A select group of finalists is invited for interviews with international panels (conducted in the fall for global applicants and early summer for Chinese applicants).

6. Important Recurring Dates
​The program operates on two distinct annual timelines:

• Chinese Passport Holders (Mainland, HK, Taiwan, Macao): Applications open in January and close in May.
• U.S. and International Applicants: Applications open in April and close in September.
• Final Notification: Most applicants are notified of their status by November/December each year for an August start date the following year.
