New Zealand Scholarships for  Papua New Guinea

Each year, the New Zealand Government offers fully funded Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships to eligible students from Papua New Guinea to undertake tertiary studies in New Zealand.
These scholarships were previously known as New Zealand Development Scholarships and later New Zealand Pacific Scholarships, but are now unified under the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships programme.
The initiative supports students from Pacific countries by building skills and knowledge that contribute to national development back home.

Types of Manaaki Scholarships Available1. Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships (Long-Term Study)These are the main scholarships available for Papua New Guinean students to pursue:

• Undergraduate degrees (Bachelor’s)
• Postgraduate qualifications (Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma, Master’s, PhD)

Study is undertaken at approved institutions in New Zealand or sometimes within the Pacific region.

📅 Closing date: Around 31 May annually
👉 A pre-application eligibility check is usually required before submitting a full application.

2. Short-Term Training ScholarshipsThese programmes are designed for professionals and government employees:

• Skills-based and vocational training
• Courses lasting less than 12 months
• Focused on practical development needs

📅 Applications may be open at different times during the year, depending on the course.

Priority Fields of StudyScholarships are awarded in areas aligned with Papua New Guinea’s development goals, including:
Economic Development

• Economics, finance, and banking
• Business management and marketing
• Engineering and infrastructure planning
• Agriculture, forestry, and resource management
• Environmental studies

Education

• Teacher education and training
• Curriculum development
• Education leadership and administration
• Assessment and evaluation

Governance and Community Development

• Public policy and administration
• Financial management and auditing
• Monitoring and evaluation
• Social work and community development

Qualification Levels CoveredSuccessful applicants can study towards:

• Diploma (1–2 years)
• Bachelor’s Degree (3–4 years)
• Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
• Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
• Master’s Degree (1–2 years)
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (3–4 years)
