- Eligible Countries: Permanent residents of Canada, Canadian citizens, and Foreign citizens
- First Doctoral Degree: Pursuing your first doctoral degree, including joint undergraduate/graduate research programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component.
- Duration of Studies: Not completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of last May .
- Nomination: Must be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota
- Intent to Pursue Studies: Intend to pursue full-time doctoral studies and research at the nominating institution in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results.
- Scholarship History: Must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
- Academic Achievement: Should have achieved a first-class average in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent.

- Consult the Vanier CGS quota page to ensure your chosen institution has a quota for the applying year.
- Application Steps:
- Applications can be initiated either by the student informing the faculty of graduate studies or by the institution initiating the nomination process.
- Prepare and submit applications to the nominating institution using the ResearchNet application system by their internal deadline.
- The nominating institution performs the internal candidate selection process.
- Forward recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by November 1,
- The Secretariat coordinates the review process and presents recommendations to the Tri-Agency Programs Steering Committee.
- Nominated candidates will be notified of the results in April .
